What’s it take to start a blog & vlog?
a series by Elise Whitworth PART ONE: taking the first step For years now, I have been talking about starting a blog and/or vlog, both as a professional and personally for friends and family. In fact, it's almost ridiculous that I, a professional web developer haven't started yet! If I can do things with software in minutes that take others hours of painstaking trial and error, a blog and/or a vlog should be easy for me. The problem is, I'm a perfectionist. When I imagine producing a vlog, I picture a high quality video with a good backdrop and lighting, myself perfectly polished signing perfect ASL, the video captioned. The script would be written and practiced beforehand. Then the video would have to be well edited with smooth transition between scenes and little pop ups of text. The sheer magnitude of the project becomes overwhelming. Just thinking about it makes me feel like taking a vacation already! But you know what the most successful videos, blogs, and vlogs have in common? Not their gloss, glitz, or smooth presentation. Some of the most viewed videos and articles are raw, gritty, and completely, obviously home-made, biased, and totally unprofessional.So I will take heart in that knowledge -- I'm going to squish the perfectionist in me and throw caution to the wind! Instead, I'm going to focus on the message; the content. That's what people are interested in. For a blogger or vlogger, that means they always have to have something interesting to say or observe.
Here begins my first stab at saying something interesting -- sharing the journey of learning the ins and outs of blogging and vlogging. I know all the things to do -- once I finish writing this entry, I have to create the video, edit it, post it, test it, install a video player on a website, and then distribute it. In Part Two of this series, I will describe the different things I learned during the process - how time consuming was it to create the video? What would have saved time? Did I pull off a professional appearance? If yes, how did I pull it off with a little webcam?
In later posts, I will implement and discuss the different tools and services available such as blog sites, google analytics, video editing and conversion, third party editing services, affiliate advertising, and so on. Hope this was interesting so far -- and I look forward to delivering an even more interesting post next time!
