Project Planning

A project plan, complete with scope, objectives, resource needs, and a schedule is the backbone of any successful project. How can you plan a marketing campaign if you don't know when your product will be complete? How can anyone put together an accurate budget if you don't know what you will need to buy and when? The list goes on. Project planning generally follows three steps: discovery; project development; scheduling. The end product is a neatly organized plan ready for implementation, clear with objectives, and complete with a vision.

Discovery During the discovery phase, the project planner reviews all of the organization's existing materials, interviews managers and subordinates, conducts surveys, and works with stakeholders to develop the vision and objectives for the project. Project Development Then, the project planner develops the project scope, budget, requirements, and resource needs. Meetings are held frequently to review and finalize the scope as it is being developed, determining whether resources are available or need to be arranged for. Resource Planning & Scheduling Finally, the project begins to kick into gear. Bids are distributed, contractors are chosen, and a schedule is created. Marketing planning can now begin, with a schedule campaigns can be planned, partnerships formed, contracts signed. The entire project planning phase may take anywhere from one week to one year - depending on the size of the project, resource availability, and pace. For instance, one may contract a planner to come to their facility for one week and develop the project on-site, working full time.
